Tags are short labels you attach to content so that both people and assistants can find the right information faster. Document tags apply to a single document, which makes them the precise tool for labeling individual files inside a larger corpus. Why tag documents?#
When someone asks an assistant a question, the system looks for tags that match keywords in the query. A matching tag points the assistant to the documents most likely to hold the answer, which improves both relevance and speed. The Manage Tags window also notes that tags power filters and permissions, so good tagging pays off well beyond search.Corpus tags and document tags work together:Corpus tags label everything in a corpus at once. Use them for broad themes, such as "hr" or "support". See Corpus tagging. Document tags label one document. Use them for specifics, such as "returns", "2026-pricing", or "onboarding-checklist".
Use cases#
Mixed corpora: A "Customer Support" corpus holds return policies, shipping guides, and warranty terms. Tag the refund policy "returns" and the delivery guide "shipping", so questions about refunds land on the right document.Regions and versions: Tag region-specific handbooks "us", "uk", and "pk", or release notes by version such as "v2.4", so the assistant answers "what changed in 2.4?" or "what's the UK leave policy?" from the right file.Document types: Tags like "faq", "contract", or "how-to" make it easy to filter the document list.
1. Open the document#
Open your corpus, and on the Documents tab, click the document you want to tag. Its details open in a panel on the right.2. Add a tag and save#
Click Add tag in the document panel. In the Manage Tags window, type a tag under ADD A TAG and click Add (or press Ctrl + Enter). Add as many tags as you need, then click Save. To remove a tag, click the x next to it before saving.Use short, consistent, lowercase tags, such as "returns" rather than "Return Policy Docs". Consistent tags make filtering and search more reliable.
3. Check the tag on the document#
The message Tags updated successfully appears, and the tag now shows under TAGS in the document panel. You can also tag a document from its More options menu in the document list by choosing Add tag.
